March is Food Shelf Month in Minnesota. This project is in support of the United Ways effort to collect 100,000 pounds of food to be distributed in the local food shelfs.
We will collect food shelf items through March 26, 2009, in our classrooms, at which time the high school student council members will collect them from MHES.
Here are assigned food shelf suggestions to grade levels. These are only suggestions. We thought it might be fun for some to put together meal packages, "meals in a bag", so students could put all the fixings together for a family dinner.
Students can decide what they'd like to put together. Some suggestions include:
5th Grade - Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Cheese Container, Canned Mushrooms or tomatoes
4th Grade - Tuna, Egg Noodles, Cream Soup, Tuna Helper, Hamburger Helper
3rd Grade - Pancake Mix, Biscuit, Syrup, Pop Tarts, Coffee, Tea
2nd Grade - Chunky Soups, Soup Mix, Crackers, Canned Stews, Canned Chili
1st Grade - Toilet Tissue, Kleenex, Bath Soap, Shampoo, Personal care Items
Kindergarten - Cake Mix, Cookie Mix, Frosting, Pudding, Animal crackers
This is not an all inclusive list. All Non Perishable Food items are welcome. There are no restrictions on donations and a student's grade level. Financial donations will also be accepted.

Project
Students checked out a biography and are going to read it to find out what makes the person they read about worthy of getting a book written about them. We are studying characteristic traits and then they will be teaching their classmates about the person they read about.
Math
Students are continuing to practice math facts.
We are in the middle of Unit 8 -FRACTIONS
3rd graders should know:
- how to shade in parts of a set
-put fractions on a number line
-what is one whole and then the fraction of it
-how to write fractions
-equivalent fractions
DO YOU KNOW WHAT A HIDATO IS? TRY GOOGLING IT AND SEE IF YOU AND YOUR 3RD GRADER CAN FIGURE THEM OUT! GOOD LUCK!
