It is a 3rd grade requirement to be able to write their first and last name in cursive by the time they come back after winter break. We have been practicing the upper case letters, they learned the lower case in 2nd grade. Ask your child to write their name in cursive for you!

Social
We are studying the Southeastern states now. Students should be completing their packet and studying for the test.
Science
Students have been working with Rocks and doing a whole lot of investigating about the properties of rocks.
Writing
We have been working on descriptive writing. Students chose their favorite room in their house and described what it looked like and why it is their favorite. We continue to practice writing topic sentences and using adjectives to describe.
Reading at home!
By this time in 3rd grade students should be able to sit and read for at least 30 minutes. I encourage more, of course!
But for sure 30 minutes a day. I know this is a busy time of year,so try to get it in as much as possible.Remember it is really important to read to third graders also. They still need role models for reading out loud.
Please keep writing the minutes in your child's agenda.

Reading
Students have been in Book Clubs and reading all different kinds of books. We have been discussing and writing about the books with each other.
All 3rd graders are going to a play!
On Wednesday, December 10th we will be going to the Paramount in St. Cloud to see the play
Madeline's Christmas.
Madeline's Christmas.
Math
We have finished Unit 4! This unit was all about multiplication. Students should continue to practice the 0-9's facts. We are continuing to practice in class and do timed tests. The rule of thumb is around 5 seconds per fact if you are timing your child. There are a lot of web sites that have online practice and sheets that you can print out. Just google multiplication practice and you will get a ton of sites to check out. Feel free to call and let me know if you need some assistance.
PRACTICE WILL HELP YOUR CHILD BE AND FEEL MORE SUCCESSFUL IN CLASS!
We started Unit 5-it is all about place value and reading BIG numbers. It is important for 3rd graders to know how to read and write numbers to the ten thousands place value.
One idea for practice at home is to use a deck of cards to dice and use them to get the digits and have your child write them down and then say the number.
